The Swahili Scrap Opera
Since 2003, Watafiti members have been involved in the production of a Swahili Scrap Opera, the Kiswahili working title of the production is "Utenzi Gerezani". The plan is to perform this overwhelming stage show in football stadium in Tanzania. Like in most countries it is the regions where culture and entertainment is in limited supply compared with the Capital City. East Africa deserves more than televised soaps.
The story line of the scrap opera, the music and the Kiswahili script have been completed for seventy percent. Some forty Tanzanian artists have contributed in one way or an other in shaping the production to its present status. Many more will be associated especially because we also start involving Swahili speaking artists outside Tanzania.
In case you are interested in joining the making of, arguably, "The First Swahili Opera" please register and read more about the project.
The "scrap" is an important component of the whole project, not only are the main actors scrapworkers, also scrap music and the inventive us of recycled materials (Chuma Chakavu) in developing countries is featured in the Opera story line.
In an interview in Dar es Salaam the role of the Swahili Scrap Opera in Tanzania is deliberated by various professional.
